Faithful Fifteenth

Well, self congratulations are in order today, as KC celebrates our 15th year anniversary, which is apparently signified by crystal or glass, but also by the ruby gemstone. A celebration to share with you, loyal readers, as we age disgracefully together.

For our 10th anniversary you were highly complimented, dare I say flattered for your fine judgements and interests, so no need to go overboard today. Although your reward is coming, so keep paying attention.

Interpretations of the significance of crystal/glass are nuanced: on the one hand, lightness, clarity and durability of a relationship, even ‘dazzling splendour’ according to one source; but on the other hand, the fragility of crystal means it must be nurtured. Hmm, what to do?

Now, we’re all grown-ups and used to some ambiguity in our lives, so we have to recognise that the metaphor of a faithful KC marriage with each reader is logically limited, unless you view it as a very polyamorous relationship of ideas. So, we’re a cohort based on shared intellectual fidelity, if you see what I mean?

Don’t worry if you don’t, as I may have flogged that allusion a little. Except to note that the median marriage duration in Australia before separation is 8.4 years, and 12.2 years before divorce. So we’re gently going gangbusters, so to speak.

Okay, down to the business end of this celebration: an anniversary gift for our rusted-on readers. Crystal was too expensive, and symbolically complicated. So by plundering end of financial year marketing and hospitality budgets, we’ve been able to procure two dozen bottles of fine Ruby Port from Porto.

First in first served, but that should cover most of you. If port’s not your go, or indeed alcohol, then we’ve got plenty of six packs of Ruby grapefruit juice already in the fridge. Just drop by the back bar at the pub to pick up your gift, and if I’m there we’ll share a drop together.

Cheers!
